THE EFFECT OF POSITIVE THINKING

This year I have been really focussing on my mental health and just talking about mental health on the blog. I am a big struggler with my mental health but decided I don’t want to let it affect me as much anymore. Now that I am 21 years old, I feel like I want to live life to the fullest with all the people I adore. I want to be happy and appreciate every small thing in life. This is a huge turnaround for me in my life as I used to always be quite pessimistic and negative.

Now that I am focussing more on positive thinking and being happy and appreciative of small things in my day-to-day life, I have noticed a few changes in my life, behaviour and just how I approach things. And I'm dying to share!

PUTTING THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE

The first thing is my positive thinking, which affects my mood, is putting things in perspective. Before I used to always overthink about things too much, and it would always affect me in a negative way. Nowadays I feel like I have become better in bringing some perspective into life. It’s really not that bad isn’t it? And the feedback you got at uni? It’s not targeted right at you; it’s not to hurt your feelings. The feedback is only here to make you become an even better person. The best thing I have done to bring things into perspective is to think about whether or not it’s worth it. Is it worth thinking about? No? Well then just let it leave go.

Obviously it’s easier said than done, but it truly helps. Before I used to suck at this, it definitely takes time to adjust your mind to this. Even though I still find it hard to not worry about things too much and to put things more in perspective, I still worry about things so, so much!

APPRECIATE THE SMALL THINGS IN LIFE

In my New Years Resolutions post I already talked you through how I wanted to appreciate the small things in life. Before I never really used to think about smaller things in life. To me it would only be normal to think about the milestones in life. There's honestly nothing wrong with that. However, I discovered that it affected my mood in a negative way. I was worrying about achieving to reach my goals instead of living in the moment.

One thing that is really helping me remind me of appreciating the small things is my bullet journal. I am constantly writing down my favourite things that happened during a day. I find that it's such a good way to appreciate small little things and to bring days into perspective too. Ever since I started my bullet journal and started tracking my mood every day, as well as my favourite thing about a day. This all helped me feel so much more positive and happy.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GREAT, POSITIVE PEOPLE

One thing I have noticed while growing up is the importance of having positive, great people in your life. Not only do you want people around you to be positive, you want them to make you feel great, powerful and as if you can take on the world.

While I was a teen going through puberty, I always noticed how some other people affected my mood. If someone was feeling particularly down and negative, I would eventually feel like that too. Now of course there’s nothing wrong with feeling down every now and again, because we all go through dark and sad phases in our life. I am not saying to ditch those people. Just make sure to also hang out with positive people at the same time. It’s the only way to help you through darker times, as well as helping others through darker times in their lives.

I truly believe that people should be in your life to lift you up when you are going through sad days. They have to make you feel inspired to keep going, even when life is tough. And also be that person to those around you. Don't be jealous of them, be happy or proud of them. Be there for them whenever they need you, make them feel great and let them know you believe in them. Sometimes that's all someone needs to hear when they're going through a rough patch.

DON'T FORGET TO SMILE

It’s no secret that smiling affects your mood and positive thinking. There are enough studies that show the importance of people smiling. Smiling your way through life is so important. Nowadays I always find myself smiling at the little things in life. Whether I am with my friends, family or if I am alone, I always try to smile about something.

Sometimes I smile because my friends make a funny, stupid or inappropriate joke. Sometimes it’s because I stub my toe and have to giggle because I am so clumsy. Whether it’s that cute old couple sitting hand in hand at the bus stop that is giving you that 'pulling on your heartstring' smile or it's because that cute boy or girl in the bus, train or tram gave you a polite smile, nod or even said hello. Sometimes you just smile because you're happy.

When you truly think about it, there's always something small to smile about throughout the day, right? We always find something to smile about throughout the day and therefore I am a big believer of ‘A day without laughter is a day wasted’.

I think its so important to smile more and just feel love in every minute of the day, as hippy as it may sound it makes you feel so good. I've been meaning to start a bullet journal, I love aimlessly rambling in my journal but bullet journals just seem so fun!
