ACNE PRONE SUMMER SKINCARE ROUTINE

Over the years I have become a skincare junkie. This mainly has to do with my getting horrible cystic acne when I was 18 years old. Ever since I am just constantly hunting down skincare products that can contain and hopefully eventually even cure my cystic breakouts. Now that it’s summer I have noticed that my skin has been so much better. I am pretty sure it has something to do with me finding products that I absolutely love and use every day as well as slapping on a lot less makeup because it’s just ‘too hot’. In this post I wanted to share my current skincare routine with you as I feel like I have finally got my cystic acne under control. I am not saying that my skincare routine is going to cure your cystic acne, but I definitely do think that a few of these products could possibly help you too this summer!

Rituals Cleansing balm

I always cleanse my face, especially during the summer time it’s so important to cleanse as there’s just so much sweat, SPF and other residue of products that could clog your pores. That honestly sounds disgusting, but it’s so true! So whenever I start off my ‘night routine’ I start by cleansing my face with a cleansing balm. I personally love this Rituals cleansing balm as it removes all of my makeup with just two pea-sized dollops of cleansing balm. I also love this product because it’s vegan friendly and cruelty free. I am pretty sure that this product has been so kind to my skin because it doesn’t have any nasty, chemical ingredients in it.

So like I said before, I apply two pea-sized dollops of the cleansing balm onto my fingers, massage it on my fingers a bit and then massage it all over my face and neck. Once I know I have the product pretty much everywhere on my face I put my hands in some lukewarm water to make them a little wet. I then massage the product some more into my skin with the lukewarm water to make the product a bit creamy. Next thing I do is put a face cloth into the lukewarm water and remove the product off my face.

Paula’s Choice Pore Normalizing cleanser

If there’s one thing I have learnt over the past few years, is that it’s so important to double cleanse your face, especially during the evening and in the summer! The first cleanse is to remove all of the dirt of your face, the second cleanse is to actually cleanse your face.

When I have finished cleansing my face with the Rituals Cleansing balm, I put a pea-sized dollop of the Paula’s Choice Pore Normalizing cleanser on my fingers and massage it onto my face and neck. Once again, I wet my fingers and massage the product into my skin again to make it creamier. I then grab the face cloth again and rinse the product off with some lukewarm water.

In the mornings I only tend to cleanse once, as I feel like that’s more than enough on my face. If I do a double cleanse in the morning, I tend to breakout because I am cleansing too often. I use that product to cleanse my skin. I would usually do the same routine as I would do at night, so there’s not much of a difference there. If I am in a real rush in the morning, I would skip cleansing with a cloth and just use the Paula’s Choice cleanser in the shower.

Clarins Exfoliating Toner

In the evening I also tend to tone my face with an exfoliating toner. Right now I am using an old time favourite, which is the Clarins Gentle Exfoliating toner. I recently started using a toner again, and it’s mainly because my aesthetician told me I had to because I had to balance out my skin’s Ph balance. I would usually put this on a cotton pad and ‘sweep’ the cotton pad on all over my face and neck. Then I would turn the cotton pad around and do it again, so you’re kind of double toning too.

ViDerm Complete Care for Acne Prone Skin

Next step is applying a cream. I use the ViDerm Complete Care For Acne Prone skin. I kind of see this as a treatment/serum for preventing my from coming through acne as well as helping to clear up hyperpigmentation caused by my acne. This is the main reason why I use this product. It contains Vitamin C, Azelaic, Salicylic and Glycolic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide and Retinol. It is a little miracle product in a bottle that is slowly but surely getting my acne and my pigmentation under control.

Once again, I put about two pea-sized dollops of this cream all over my face and neck and let it sink in for a while. It can sting quite a bit when putting it on, especially when you’ve just toned your face with the toner I use, because it contains acid. I have gotten used to the stingy feeling by now. I apply this cream in the morning and at night to achieve the results I want to achieve.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera gel has been a real miracle and game changer in my life. My cousin got me into aloe vera gel last year, and I am now using it on a daily basis. This definitely is a multifunctional product, as it works for pretty much every skincare concern that you’ve got. But I use one bigger dollop of this all over my face and neck to make sure that my skin can ‘repair’ itself with the ‘magical healing power that Aloe Vera’ in my opinion has. I am not even sure if this is actually true or not, but my skin doesn’t react to this at all. I use this twice a day nowadays and find that it works best that way. Sometimes my skin can get a bit bumpy because it has a bit of a reaction to all the acids that are in the ViDerm cream. That’s when I usually forget to put the Aloe Vera gel on and it’s a reminder to use the product again.

So there might not be a logical or aesthetician approved reason to start Aloe Vera gel, but I found that it has definitely helped with keeping my skin soft and acne free. I do have to say that if you’re looking into buying an Aloe Vera gel, you should probably invest in one that has between 90% to 99% aloe vera in it. Aloe Vera should be the main ingredient in the product, otherwise Aloe Vera probably won’t work for you. Lots of aloe vera gels actually tend to have lots of alcohol in it, which is so, so bad! Definitely do not invest in aloe vera gel that has alcohol in it as alcohol dries out the skin so badly. So basically avoid any skincare products that have alcohol in it! I use the Aloe Pura Aloe Vera gel.

La Roche Posay Tolériane Ultra cream

This might seem a bit excessive but after I have used the ViDerm cream and the Aloe Vera Gel, I also use another moisturizer. Because I use quite a few products that contain acids to clear my acne and reduce my hyperpigmentation, I feel like I need to use products that repair my skin when it’s extra sensitive. It comes as no surprise that I am still using the La Roche Posay Tolériane Ultra Creams for this. In the mornings I usually use about two or three pumps of the La Roche Posay Tolérane Ultra Fluid. You could say this is my version of a day cream.

At night I use two to three pumps of the La Roche Posay Tolériane Ultra Overnight. This product is my nighttime product. I absolutely love the La Roche Posay Ultra creams and have gone through at least five bottles of both of these, if not more. This range has been designed especially for people who have extremely sensitive skin. These creams help soothe your skin and make your skin appear smooth.

Rituals SPF 50 face cream

The last thing I use during the day is an SPF for my face. SPF is so important; I have talked about this so much already. Read my post about what body parts we all tend to forget when putting on SPF, it’s definitely a must-read for summer! Anyway, I always end my morning skincare routine with a face SPF. I need to put SPF on as I am using so many acid products on my face. The SPF prevents any further pigmentation damage the sun can do while my skin is so exposed because of the acid. During the summer it’s even more important to use some sort of SPF face cream.

My latest obsession is the Rituals The Ritual of Karma Sun Protection Face Cream with SPF 50. Over the past few months I have talked about this face sun cream so much. It’s such a beautiful smelling product that does not break me out. SPF’s can be quite oily or sticky and can cause breakouts. Luckily this one does none of that. This cream is rapidly absorbed by the skin so it’s perfect and you don’t have to wait long at all before you can put your makeup on.
