THE LOWDOWN ON BUILDING AN EFFORTLESS AND TIMELESS WARDROBE

I am really into my classic, versatile pieces. Building yourself an effortlessly chic, timeless wardrobe is great, because you know you will get a wear out of those items. Throughout the years I have definitely learnt that it’s definitely not about the amounts of clothes you own, but rather about quality. Quality over quantity is a saying that can be applied to multiple aspects in life, but it should definitely be applied when creating a effortlessly chic and timeless wardrobe. I feel like over the years I have build quite a chic, effortless and timeless wardrobe with a couple of learning points that I would love to share in today’s post.

Only invest in classic items

Spending a bigger amount of money into clothing or accessories can be quite scary. You’re quite literally giving a store a bulk of money on one, maybe two items on clothing. It’s usually more tempting to buy lots of clothes for that same amount of money. Over the years I have definitely learned it’s better to invest a bit more money into your classic items. Classic or versatile items in your wardrobe are good to spend some more money on, as it are items you know you will get a lot of wear out. I always like to justify a larger, bigger or more expensive purchase by how much the cost per wear will eventually be. If you buy a classic white shirt for example, you know you will get a lot of wear out it. Then it becomes an investment in your wardrobe, which means you’re allowed to spend a bit more money on it. Obviously the classic items are different in everyone’s wardrobe. My classics are for example basic, cotton and linen t-shirts and blouses whereas someone else might feel like a flower-patterned dress is a staple in their wardrobe.

Think about the fabrics

This past year I have definitely found out the importance of fabrics in quality of clothes. The right fabrics can truly make or break an outfit. I truly believe that picking clothes made from the right sort of fabrics can really make your outfit look super chic, effortless or timeless. This past year I have been a big lover and advocate of clothes made from natural fabrics. If you know me by now, you know that comfort is always my number one priority in clothing. I want to feel comfortable in whatever I wear, otherwise I cannot feel confident in what I wear. I have found that clothes made from natural fabrics are more comfortable for me personally to wear. Especially during the summer time I have reached towards the more natural fibre clothes, as it’s warm and you rather not have anything really clinging to your body. Not only do the clothes made from natural fabrics feel more comfortable on your skin to wear, they also can help you achieve that effortlessly chic look. Personally I have found this past year that natural fabrics, such as cotton and linen also look better on me personally.

Purchase it cheaper when it's trendy

I definitely do not class myself as someone who is super on trend and extremely fashionable. Every now and again though I do like to see buy pieces that are a bit more on trend. I don’t think this happens often, as I have such a distinct taste for more neutral items. However, these past two years I have seen the tiny sunglasses trend and have actually quite loved it. Instead of investing a huge amount of money in those tiny pairs of sunglasses you often see coming by on my Instagram, I would much rather spend a bit less money on those trendy items. I am still extremely unsure whether or not my big moon face actually suits this pairs of sunglasses and I don’t feel confident enough to wear them out. So to me, it seems like a waste of my money to spend a lot of money this sort of thing.

Sometimes I also like to think a bit more about making a purchase, whether that’s an expensive or a cheaper one. Sometimes I am think about investing a huge amount of money on a piece of clothing, but can get unsure whether I would get the cost per wear out of that investment. That’s why, when I feel like this, I like to buy a cheaper alternative first. I have done this on multiple occasions with accessories, such as scarves, sunglasses and boots.

Think twice about a purchase

This also brings me to my final tip for building an effortlessly chic wardrobe. I think building an effortlessly chic wardrobe is all about being mindful about whatever you buy. What I mean with building an effortless and chic wardrobe is that it isn’t necessary to buy a piece on a whim. I always like to think at least twice before actually purchasing an item. I feel like I always talk about this, but impulse shopping is such a waste of your money and not very mindful. In my opinion it’s better to find something you like, whether that’s in store or online, put it on a little wish list or take a photo of it. What I like to do is make up scenarios of how and when I would wear that outfit and with what sort of items. If you’re then still thinking about that particular item in one or two weeks time and you know you will get a lot of wear out of it, it’s probably worth spending your money on.
