UPDATED SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR ACNE-PRONE, DEHYDRATED SKIN

This post contains affiliate links. This post also contains two items that were gifted to me, marked (*gifted), without an obligation to post about them. Read my full disclaimer here. Please also note that even though these products do work for me, they might not work for you. Everyone’s skin is different and reacts differently to products, so bare that in mind when you're thinking about purchasing new skincare products.

It’s been a long while since I last shared my skincare routine, but I have talked about my plan of action when I have major breakouts. You may remember my huge soy-related breakout back at the beginning of May. That breakout lasted me a good month, and my skin is still recovering from breakout. I know, it takes bloody ages... I do think I have now found myself a really good day-to-day skincare routine that helps me keep breakouts at bay. At the moment I still get the occasional pimple, which I am absolutely fine with. The three main needs my skin has at this moment is hydration, staying calm and anything anti-inflammatory. I have found that once the redness from my acne scars is less visible, the scars don’t look nearly as bad as they sometimes can look when they have just gone back down.
This is my skincare routine I use during the day and at night. I obviously don’t put SPF or anything like that on at night and don’t double cleanse in the morning. It just seemed easier for me to put all of this in one post, so it’s easy to look back on whenever you want to find this post again. Or whenever my skin decides to have a major skin freakout and I'll look back through old blog posts to see what products I used when my skin was calmer and clearer. Hey, future me! 😉
My skin is very acne prone, however this past year I have discovered that I actually get pimples because my skin is extremely dehydrated. I mostly think this is due to me listening to people at the counters recommending me acne-drying products for clearing my spots. This means I have been damaging my skin barrier quite badly for as long as I can remember. So since this year I am trying to recover my damaged skin barrier by going back to basics and making hydration my number 1 priority in my skincare routine.

Cleanse

The first step in my skincare routine, obviously is cleansing. At the moment I am using the Pixi x Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse. These pots last me for about 1 – 1,5 months and I absolutely love spending my money on this product. At night I always double cleanse by using the cleansing balm and the cleansing cream. I personally really look forward to cleansing my skin at night, so definitely like to take my time for it too.
I take a bit of the cleansing balm on my hands first, rub it in between my hands, so it’s on both of my hands. I then go and massage this into the skin on my face, neck and chest with my fingers, which is really good for breaking down makeup and/or SPF. Once I feel like I have been able to break down most of my makeup/SPF, which is usually after about 30 seconds to 1 minute of massaging, I like to wet my hands with lukewarm water. I massage my skin for another 30 seconds with the water, which changes the oily texture into a milky texture. I then like to wet a lukewarm flannel and remove the cleanser. Then I grab a little dollop of the cream cleanser in the Double Cleanse pot. Once again I massage this onto my skin for about 30 seconds to a minute. Then, again get some lukewarm water and massage it into my skin for another 30 seconds and wash it off with my flannel. I pat my face dry with a clean towel and that is my cleansing routine done.

In the mornings I actually like to use a only little bit of the cream cleanser. I massage that into my skin for 30 seconds to a minute and rinse it off again with a flannel.

Serum

My next step are serums if you’d like to call it that. I start off with The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zink 1%. This is great for reducing redness and preventing any acne breakouts from happening. I honestly think this has helped reduce the redness from my acne scars so much, so I cannot live without this anymore. I put about six drops of this on the tops of my fingers on one hand, rub it into the tips of my fingers and then pat it into my face. Before moving on to my second serum, I like to let this skin into my skin for a couple of seconds. My next serum that I use is also a big favourite of mine, the La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo +. It helps to prevent any new breakouts from happening and helps with any redness and uneven texture. I put a dollop of that onto my hands, then the products on my hands on my cheeks, forehead, nose and chin and massage it into my skin.

7-Skin method with toner

Next I like to start hydrating my face. This is actually a really interesting approach I have recently learnt about and briefly mentioned in my five favourites of August post. I like to do the 7-Skin method with the Kiehl’s Calendua Herbal-Extract toner (*gifted). This toner is super calming and helps with inflammation, which I feel is definitely something I need to prevent any new breakouts from coming. With this method that came from Korea, you put a bit of toner of essence onto your clean hands and then pat it into your face. You repeat this process 7 times, hence the 7-Skin name. What this does is it is an incredible way to hydrate and plumps your skin.
The way I am doing this method is not actually how the Korean influencers and dermatologists tell you to do so, as a toner or beauty essence should be the only product that should do the job of hydrating and plumping the skin. I have not tried doing the 7-Skin method without using my serums first, and personally don’t think I will try it without it either. I am still a bit too afraid to skip my serums at this stage, as I feel like I have finally got my skin under control and would rather not have any big breakouts from skipping my serums. At the moment it seems like my skin can handle the serums as well as the 7-Skin method with this toner, so I won’t be making any adjustments.

Moisture

After doing the 7-skin method your skin should feel hydrated and it might not be necessary to moisturise afterwards. I personally do like to put a bit of a calming and hydrating moisturiser afterwards. I feel like that really shows how dehydrated my skin actually is, as I can even put moisturiser on after putting 7 layers of toner on. At the moment I am using two of my favourite moisturisers: the Kiehl’s Calendua Serum-Infused water cream (*gifted) and the Clinique Moisture Surge 72-hour auto-replenishing hydrator. The Kiehl’s moisturiser was gifted to me to try after an event of Kiehl’s I went to. I absolutely love using this cream. It’s a super light water-like cream that feels super hydrating and helps reduce any redness because of the calendula. Calendula is known for it’s anti-inflammatory and hydrating properties, which is basically what I am after at this moment in time.
On other days I like to use the Clinique Moisture Surge 72-hour auto-replenishing hydrator, which is also a very light gel cream. I also absolutely love to use the moisturiser as it gives me such a hydration boost. This Clinique Moisture Surge 72-hour auto-replenishing hydrator is great as it contains aloe vera water, which not only helps to hydrate your skin, but also has a calming effect on my skin. There’s also hyaluronic acid in here, which is great for keeping any moisture locked in. I love using both of these moisturisers as they help my skin look plump, fresh, glowy and healthy. I scoop about a dollop of both of these moisturisers out and then put it on my foreahead, cheeks, nose, chin, neck and chest.

SPF

Finally, if I am doing this routine in the morning or whenever I am off to go out, I also like to put SPF on. Sunscreen is such a big part of my routine, as I basically need it to help prevent any acne scars from getting worse if I am out and about. Besides protecting my acne scars, it’s just great in general to help with anti-aging and to prevent any skin diseases. At the moment I have gone back to the La Roche Posay Anthelios Shaka Fluide SPF 50 without any perfume. I chose to go back to this product, as it doesn’t contain any perfume. Perfume can actually irritate skin and cause breakouts, which is why I decided to stop using my other sunscreen.
This sunscreen is definitely on the runnier side, so I like to put this on the back of my hand first and then put a couple of dollops on my forehead, both of my cheeks, nose and chin. I then spread it out and make sure to put some extra on the back of my hand to put it on my neck and chest.

    1. Hi! Thank you so much! Looking back on these products now, they were mostly focused on soothing to my inflamed skin. The Clinique cream did help with the dehydration. I am currently on accutane for my acne and it is making my skin really dry from the inside out. I feel super dry and dehydrated, so I completely changed my skincare routine again. My latest blog post is about my current skincare routine that is helping my dehydration problems a lot better than products I used before. Hope this helps!
