REASSURANCES WHEN YOU'RE STARTING UNI

Throughout the last couple of years at university I have learned so much about myself and about university. I can overthink about anything basically and remember being super stressed and anxious when eventering my first year of uni. Since it’s currently back to uni season, I thought I would share some reassuring tips if you’re just starting out at university. I personally would have loved to hear these things from other uni students, as a bit of reassurance and to calm my nerves a bit. I had absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into as a 17-year old.

You’re not the only one who doesn’t know what they are doing.

Like I said in my intro, I had absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into. I did not know what to expect at all from my courses and felt like I was too stupid at first because I had no clue what my teachers were talking about. This is normal. Or at least it’s normal to the girls from uni and me whom I recently talked about this to. We’re all new, it’s all scary and exciting and it’s normal to not really understand the basics of your courses just yet. In about a month’s time you will understand so much more about the courses and you will slowly get the hang of what you’re actually studying for.

Meeting new people is easy compared to high school. There are no cliques and people you attend classes with are easy and willing to talk to you.

I found meeting new people in university rather easy. After a round of introductions you will soon discover there are mostly grown ups in the room. All of your course mates are usually just as motivated as you are to start studying your course and I found that my friends from uni were super approachable and easy to talk to from the start. I find that it’s a lot easier to make new friends at university compared to high school, where we can sometimes find each other being stuck in cliques. It’s not like that in university or college at all. Everyone is super chilled, laid back and we all just want to get through our days at university without having too much drama happening around us.

No one really cares about what you wear or how you look. Just be nice.

The first day back at high school was always dreadful to me personally. I felt like I needed to have this banging outfit and needed to dress to impress other people at my high school. University is a lot more laid back. No one really cares about what you wear or what you like at all. If you want to dress up because it makes you feel great, then definitely do it. But never feel pressured to have to dress up for uni. I mostly wear a tee and a pair of jeans at uni but I have rocked up at classes and exams wearing my gym gear, without any making on. I was actually looking like a slob and literally no one ever asked me anything about it. It’s this underlying understanding that we all have. We all struggle studying for exams, we have to finish group projects, we have work and a social life. It’s normal to be exhausted by week 2 or 3 into the course so it’s no problem to start slacking on the way you look. No one will judge you for it.

Don’t worry too much about your grades. Just do your best and that’s all you can do.

Personally I have always been someone who sees her own success by the grades teachers give me. This means I am a major overachiever and want to get the best grade possible. If there’s one thing I have learnt from university and studying, it’s that it’s definitely not about grades. It’s more important to let those things go and don’t worry about it too much. My parents have always told me to do my best, as that’s all I can do. I have been an overachiever at uni too. I was always pushing myself to get higher grades but have learnt this past half-year that it has had a really bad impact on my health. I put this immense amount of stress on myself, which is so bad. So if you’re starting out at uni, I would definitely tell you to not worry too much about your grades, as hard as it is not to focus on it. Just do your best and then you’ll be fine. It also doesn’t matter if you have to resit an exam, rewrite a group project, an essay or in my case a dissertation. Just do your best, that’s all you can do and eventually you will get there.

    1. Thank you so much Pinja, I'm so glad you liked this blog post idea. It's just a couple of reassurances I think all people who start off at uni can really benefit from. As exciting as uni can be, it can also be quite an anxious experience not knowing what to expect from uni whatsoever xx
