DIARY | A NEW YEARS RESOLUTION

In today's post I want to share a little new years resolution with you. If you would spend a day with me, you probably would notice that I am a bit of a Social Media junkie and I love it. I love being this creative with writing new blog posts, taking different photos and looking at other people's creative outlets.

I just spent lots and lots of my time on either Instagram, checking my emails or I am reading other blogs. My phone has pretty much become my second skin and I am starting to get a bit too caught up in Social Media. And we might even miss certain adventures and/or experiences because we're on our phones too much.

Therefore one of my New Years resolutions is to set myself some ground rules on when I am allowed to use Social Media. I don't think Social Media is a bad thing at all, I made new friends through my blog and I stay up to date with them and all of you via Social Media and I appreciate that so much! I just want to take certain breaks from Social Media during the day. So I also wrote down some tips for myself, and maybe even for you, if you're interested.

Don't use your phone after a certain time in the evening

I've noticed that I am wide awake when I have to go to sleep at night. This is probably because I lie in bed and work on blog posts and scroll through Social Media until I am really starting to get sleepy. Funnily enough, whenever I read a book before I go to sleep, I fall asleep within 30 minutes, whereas if I would be on my phone, I would fall asleep after a good 60 to 90 minutes. So my first tip for you is to ban yourself from using your phone after 9.30 at night.

Don't wake up in the morning and immediately check your phone

I don't know about you guys, but the first thing I do whenever I wake up is pick up my phone and check Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and my Whatsapp. It's my way of "waking up", which is not good for me at all. I usually end up being sleepy when I finish checking my Social Media and sometimes fall back asleep while I am checking it. If I am stressed and I check my phone, I can get even more stressed and since I want to be a bit more healthy - lifewise and in mind this year, I want to wake up and do some yoga or mediation instead of waking up with Instagram or Snapchat. I think waking up to some kind of exercise will really ease you into your day, which I am all for!

Put your phone away while you're in class

I find myself bored in class sometimes, so whenever I get bored in class, I go on my phone and scroll through my Instagram feed and Twitter feed and what not. But I find it so hard to focus on class after I've been texting with my friends or using other Social Media apps. So my next tip is to put your phone away in your bag when you're in class. Whenever our professors tell us that we're not allowed to have our phones on our table, I usually end up being a lot more productive, which means I don't have to stress about my exams as much in the end when deadlines come around.

Reset some, or all, of your notifications on your phone

This particular tip is one that I've been applying to my life a lot more often lately. I would say that I am hypersensitive to all kinds of sounds, so I can get quite nervous from certain sounds, which is very tiring. When I was in London in December last year, I kept receiving emails and it made me less fun because I kept checking them, because of the "pling" that would go off. I was in London and actually wanted to have fun, so I decided to change my settings so that I only receive emails whenever I open the actual app, which has given me so much peace. I still have not set this setting back to normal because I enjoy the peace.
Another thing I tend to do is mute certain Whatsapp groups. I used to get anxiety attacks just from that dreadful Whatsapp 'ping' going off 40 times a minute, so I decided to mute all of my group apps, which made me feel a lot less panicky whenever there's some kind of drama going on in those group apps.

I would like to know if you've ever done a digital detox, or if you feel like you get a bit too addicted to Social Media.
