OUTFIT | OVERCOMING A POST-HOLIDAY FUNK

It’s nearly September, which means it’s nearly time for me to go back to uni soon. This summer has been so much fun and I am kind of sad to say goodbye to summer. So many great memories have been made this summer, but more on that later. I did however find it difficult to create content during my summer break away from uni. I pretty much struggle with this every year when I come back from my summer holiday. I get this post-holiday funk where I feel uninspired and don’t really know what to write about. That explains why I have been posting so extremely inconsistent during August, which I truly hope you can forgive me for.


Now that it’s the end of summer, I somehow found my inspiration again, or my brain somehow seems to be working again. This makes it easier to find inspiration on what topics I want to write about. But before I start creating exciting autumn content coming up on the blog, I wanted to be a bit serious and talk you through how I got over my post-holiday funk.

Don’t force things

One of the most important things in creating content is that you shouldn’t force things. If I don’t feel inspired, I can’t force myself to start feeling inspired. If I have a writer’s block, I also can’t force myself to start writing. The most important thing is to not force creating content if you are feeling particularly uninspired. I feel like if you don’t create content that you’re completely satisfied with, it will probably be noticed when someone looks or reads your content. That’s why I would say that if you don’t feel inspired, you should not just be posting.

This is something I find hard to be very honest. By now we all know how this industry works, no posts on your blog or Instagram also means that your statistics will go down. I lost about 100 followers from the end of July until now because I was so inconsistent with posting on Instagram.



Take your time and go have fun

As hard as it was for me to take a few steps back from blogging, I knew I needed to do it. Mainly because I even while I was away on holiday I was constantly thinking about needing to create an photo for Instagram or thinking about what sort of content I could produce for my blog during August. It was slowly weighing me down and I wasn’t fully enjoying my holiday. Halfway through my holiday I came to a realisation. I was like you know what, I am on holiday. This is will probably be the last time that I can enjoy my summer holiday like I normally would as I am in my final year at university. So halfway through my holiday I just tried to let everything go. I started to have fun, enjoy and live in the moment. Even if this meant that my content would go up a day late. The ‘having fun‘ part continued after I came home from my holiday. When I was back in The Netherlands I just wanted to have fun with friends and family and catch up with them. I also wanted to finish reading the books that I started on my summer holiday and just did not want to focus on anything digital at all. Taking a breath and stepping away from the online world definitely helped me get out of this holiday funk. I eventually managed to get some inspiration for a blog post from just taking a little walk through my neighbourhood. It’s crazy to think how caught up we can get.

Reading

You need to do whatever your heart desires whenever you go through these phases. In my case reading helped a lot. It started with finishing the books I wanted to finish while I was away on holiday. When I came back from my holiday I also felt like reading magazines again. Reading definitely helped me get me out of my post holiday funk, as it’s such an easy way to find new topics to talk about or create content for.



A big cleaning session

I used to HATE cleaning. I hated everything about it, mainly because I can just be very lazy. However I have had a bit of a mood switch these past two weeks. I have been cleaning scrubbing everything. I went through my wardrobe, threw away half of the clothes I had not worn in a long while and I felt so good afterwards. I never truly experienced how therapeutic cleaning can be, but now I can’t stop. People usually start feeling like this during spring, with the big ‘spring cleanse’ but I am a bit late to the party with my big ‘pre-autumn cleanse’. With donating and throwing away lots of stuff I feel like such a big weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

Create a playlist with songs that make you want to work hard

The last thing that really helped me get out of my post-holiday funk is music. I woke up one morning and felt like creating a work-hard kind of playlist that I am currently listening to while typing up this post. Music has such a big influence on how I feel and my mood in general. If I listen to the right music I my writer’s block disappears and I can feel so inspired. I was dreading sitting down and actually writing this post, as I am still sometimes feel a bit meh and uninspired, but the music definitely helped me get through this!

These phases are totally normal to have in my opinion. Don't let them get to you, and know that you're not alone if you ever feel a bit stuck as a content creator. These tips helped me get over my funk, but know that everything eventually will fall back into place. So if you ever feel like this, just take your time and look after yourself, taking care of yourself is what is most important.

However, I definitely do agree with you on the fact that taking time off every once in a while is SO important! xx
