MY WINTER NIGHT-TIME ROUTINE

Have we all survived Blue Monday today gals? I honestly think mine wasn’t as bad as I initially thought it would be. I had a super productive day today and only now have time to sit down and write todays blog post. It’s been a while since I last wrote and published my blog posts on the same day. I quite like it though! Anyway, I thought it would be fun to share my current night-time routine as I feel like I finally have gotten my evening routine in check after a couple of very stressful months.

We probably all know how important it is to have routines to become accustomed to certain life patterns. Now that I don’t really have to go to university anymore and finished writing my dissertation, I noticed that the little evening routine that I had completely vanished. I went to bed at 4 in the morning and always felt exhausted throughout the day. I basically had switched around my routine and started living at night, which is not good at all. So I started making some adaptions late December and already am noticing such a difference since applying this current night-time routine. I feel a lot more energised, motivated and productive to get stuff done, which is such a great feeling!

Make a tea and take my melatonin

I usually end up putting my pyjamas or any sort of comfortable clothing on as soon as I come home. After I have had my dinner at around 7.30, I usually make myself either an herbal, green or jasmine tea at night as I find those calm me down most. Because I have slept really badly throughout November and December, I started taking melatonin in December. So with my tea I take a melatonin tablet to fall asleep at night. I usually take my melatonin either 1,5 or 2 hours before I actually go to sleep so I know I won’t feel exhausted because of it the next day. I find that taking melatonin really helps me feel sleepy and eventually fall asleep at night. I am almost out of my strip of melatonin, which is great because then I can really test if my evening routine is effective enough to make me fall asleep at night.

Update my bullet journal

One of my favourite things about my night-time routine is getting my bullet journal out and updating it. I have a couple of habit trackers written down for myself. This is how I try and make myself aware of eating more fruit and veg for example. So I usually start by updating my habit tracker, I then move on to writing down what I was grateful for that day. I then move to update Instagram trackers and I write down any last notes or inspiration I have for particular blog post ideas. Writing my blog post ideas down as well as what I am grateful for really helps me to prevent from feeling like my brain is going into overdrive at night. I usually find myself spending about an 30 minutes to 1 hour writing down notes on new blog post ideas down in my notes if I am feeling extra inspired.

Check my blog and social media

It’s usually at around 9:00 at night when I finish writing down all of my notes and stuff, which is when I check my blog and social media. This is usually the time of day I get back to anyone who has left me a comment or a message on any of my social channels. I love planning about 30 minutes in my night-time routine for this, so I know I won’t have to think about it anymore or sometimes even reply to you when I am actually supposed to be sleeping.

Evening skincare routine

Then at around 9:30 at night is when I start to cleanse my face. This is when I truly start my down time and try to not look at any screens anymore. I find that avoiding screens also really helps with falling asleep. If you do have to look at your screen at night, I truly recommend night shift mode on your computer or phone, as you just immediately feel so much less tension in your eyes. Anyway, at around 9:30 I start my evening cleanse and I take away all of the dirt that has build up on my face throughout the day. I posted a skincare routine back in autumn somewhere, which you can find here. This post is still pretty much accurate on what products I like to use to cleanse my face at night.

End the night with some reading

So it’s usually around 9:45 when I have brushed my teeth and finished doing all of my skincare. I then like to go and lie in bed with just a bed side lamp on so I can end my night by doing some reading. Reading is such a good way to end your day with. It really makes you feel calm and it helps to accomplish your reading goal if you have set one like I have. If I have a good night I am asleep by 10:30 and sometimes I fall asleep at 11:30. This is super early for me as I used to fall asleep anywhere between 2, 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning because my brain couldn’t stop overthinking every situation.
